Let’s us answer the question “Notes when using molasses liqid for pig feed”

  1. What is molasses liquid ?

Molasses Liquid , also known as Liquid molasses, molasses, is a thick liquid byproduct left after sugar has been withdrawn by the method of concentration and crystallization

Molasses Liquid is created from the production of cane sugar. After squeezing the sugarcane juice, the water is boiled to concentrate and form sugar crystals. The liquid remaining after separation of sugar crystals is molasses liquid.

Ingredient:

Molasses Liquid mainly includes:

  • Water (about 50-60%)
  • Sugar (about 30-40%, mainly sucrose, fructose and glucose)
  • Minerals (such as potassium, calcium, magnesium)
  • Vitamins (such as B1, B6)

  1. How to use molasses liquid in pig feed?

– Molasses liquid is often used as a binder, but can also partially replace grains in pig diets.

ME values of molasses liquid range from 12.5 to 13.5 MJ/kg DM (Noblet et al., 2002; Figueroa et al., 1990b; Rostagno et al., 2005), accounting for 78-84% of the ME of corn-based on basic dried materials, but only about 66-74% of that value is present in basic fresh materials.

– Molasses liquid can be mixed directly into pig feed or diluted with water for pigs to drink.

This is the most common usage. Molasses liquid can be mixed directly into pig feed in liquid or paste. When mixing molasses into food, it should be borne in mind:

Mix molasses liquid with other ingredients to ensure that pigs eat an even amount of molasses.

Use molasses liquid appropriate to the growth stage and nutritional needs of pigs.

Store foods containing molasses properly to prevent spoilage.

Molasses can replace grain in animal feed rations

– Molasses  liqud can be diluted with water for pigs to drink.

This method is suitable for piglets or pigs that are in the weaning stage.

When diluting molasses liquid with water, it should be borne in mind:

  • Dilute molasses in the right ratio (usually 1:10).
  • Provide enough clean water for pigs to drink.
  • Clean the drinking trough regularly to prevent molassess liquid from damage

– The rate of use of molasses liquid in pig feed depends on the growth stage, feed ration and other ingredients.

– An animal nutritionist should be consulted for the most effective use of molasses.

  1. Notes when using molasses liqid for pig feed

Dosage:

– Piglets: Piglets should be fed molasses liquid  at a low rate (about 5-10%) in the feed diet.

– Market hog : Molasses liquid should be fed to market hogs with a higher proportion (about 15-20%) in the diet.

– Sows: Sows should be fed molasses liquid  in moderation (about 10-15%) in the feed diet.

Although molasses liquid is quite appetizing for pigs, experts recommend against using it in high amounts

Molasses liquid has been examined in numerous tests in Latin America and South Asia. For molasses  liquid with a high ash content (14% DM), the main drawback is the risk of diarrhea for livestock, this case can occur when the molasses liquid content exceeds 10,  20 and 30% correspond to the ration for post-weaning piglets, not fully grown pigs and fattening pigs.

Diarrhoea in pigs caused by eating feed with high molasses content has been limited or resolved by adding an adsorbed fiber such as bagasse, tapioca residue, or bran to the diet (Brooks et al., 1967). Pregnant sows are capable of tolerating up to 40% molasses without adverse effects on litter performance (Garg et al., 1983).

Thanks to its laxative effect, molasses liquid can be used at 10-20% of the feed diet to overcome the problem of constipation on sows during calving (Blair, 2007).
